Hand-crafted, sculptural furnishings set the tone in this industrial flat

pPlusP Designers created an organic space with plenty of hardwood pieces.

Often, the design process starts with an initial concept, then moves onto mood boards before beginning renovations and finally choosing all the right furnishings to fill the new and improved space. In this Pok Fu Lam apartment, however, the interiors were conceived around the owner’s artful furnishings first.

“The homeowner met Taiwanese artist Hsu Wei-bin; they collaborated on the look of the apartment together,” says pPlusP Designers founder Wesley Liu, who was invited to see the artist’s collection and visit the artist’s home in Taiwan to further understand the look and feel.”I worked with Hsu on the walls and ceiling design, the layout, the feeling… He makes furniture that’s of a certain style, and I designed an interior that fits his works.”

It was an artistic journey that motivated the designer to experiment with new forms and practices in the home – most noticeably the use of concrete moulding, which was poured over a brick foundation and fashioned into the kitchen and bathroom countertops as well as the moulded concrete washbasin in the guest bathroom. Concrete is also spread onto the walls for a consistently flowing, unfinished look that runs throughout the home.

The dressing room is cooled by a Minka Aire Artemis fan available via El:ar. The rough wall treatment separates the communal area from the bedroom.

In the living room, hardwood furnishings by Hsu Wei-bin and soft furnishings in linen made by the artist's wife Tsao Shih-mei set the tranquil mood.

The dining room is set with a hardwood table and seating from Hsu, along with an industrial light made from paper and wiring also crafted by the Taiwanese artist.

Brushed concrete walls have a relaxing effect, particularly when added to the bedroom and offset by white accessories.

The kitchen is stocked with delicate hand-painted ceramics collected across Asia. The guest bathroom showcases some of Wesley's many experiments, including the mosaic tiling effect in the shower and the sink made from poured concrete.
