We speak to local artist and winner of Art Central’s Rise Award, Vivian Poon. The award, sponsored by J. Crew, recognizes the most promising emerging artist at Art Central this year. Vivian gives us the latest on her work – drawings and painting on vintage school notebooks that evoke understated simplicity.
I’m very happy with the award. It is always an honor when others recognize your work. I am very grateful to be the recipient of this award, but it’s equally important to focus back on the art making process, and further develop my practice.
I started exhibiting at the Mur Nomade gallery as my good friend Tsang Chui Mei, who is also my ex-studio-mate and fellow artist, was invited by Mur Nomade to do a show in May last year, and she invited me to join the project.
My latest exhibition Yellow, Blue, Green, White and Red is a series of work, exploring the theme of news and information
Out of all the projects I’ve worked on it is really difficult to pick a single piece of work that I favor over another. Some are definitely better received then others, but to me they are all just various attempts of addressing different things that I find important and interesting.
I have a few future projects that I’m excited about. I will be in a show organised by Ko Sin Tung and Sonja Ng called After Image. It will be an exhibition about the printed book medium and its relationship with image. My piece in the show is still being developed, but it will be a semi-continuation of my work at Art Central.
