Summer Lovin’: Six highlights at the Katamama in Bali

It's all in the details for this brand new design hotel.

A trip to Bali is enough to induce envy as well as a few unfollows once you post that poolside cocktail. We say, take it up a notch at the newly opened Katamama – PTT Family’s first hotel in Seminyak, which veers away from the tried-and-tested formula for a Balinese villa. Armed with contemporary design, a hip approach and a handful of surprises, the hotel is a destination in itself. Here are our favourite highlights:

I Say Potato

Never has a hotel been so perfectly positioned for a beach party. Walk out and in less than 25 steps (sure, I counted) you are inside the iconic Potato Head Beach Club, glass of rosé in hand, ready to let the good times roll. Guests get priority access to those oh-so-coveted beachfront day beds with no minimum charge. Just be sure to speak to the cultural concierge at breakfast so they can book you a spot.

Drink Big

Why would anyone ever settle for a mini bar when you can have a maxi bar? Yes, you heard correctly. Every suite (and they’re all suites) at the Katamama comes replete with an incredibly grown-up “maxi bar,” jam-packed with full-sized bottles of house-infused spirits, and all the paraphernalia one could ever need to make the perfect cocktail.  The mini bar is officially dead to me. Gone. Vamoose!

Made to Measure

Design geeks will fall head over heels with the amount of thought put into the interiors. The rooms are furnished with vintage Scandinavian furniture and feature indigo accessories sourced from local workshops in Ubud. Everything down to the glasses used at Akademi was custom-made for the hotel. Best yet: visit Canaan and you can take a piece of Katamama magic home.

Bricking It

The architecture is equally stunning – the hotel is constructed from 1.4million handmade, locally sourced Balinese bricks, which took two years to procure. The way the light dapples and shifts through the building over the course of the day are beautiful… and makes for some seriously insta-worthy pics.

Pre-Breakfast Bliss Out

The sunrise poolside yoga—one of the many activities on offer as part of the hotel’s “Cultural Programme”— does require a 7.30am start, but is well worth it. Firstly, for the deliciously smug feeling that comes from being one of the only people awake in the whole of Seminyak, and secondly for all the blissed-out breakfast indulgence that can legitimately ensue.

Keep ’em Suite

Picture this: You have booked the Katamama Suite for the weekend (with up to three others—the suite very comfortably sleeps four) and have just spent all day at the pool at the Potato Head Beach Club. You are now about to host an amazing dinner for 12 on your suite’s own spectacular private rooftop deck, with a picture perfect sunset and many, many, mojitos all part of the package. Your friends will quite probably love you forever.
